How do you show up in ChatGPT and other AI answers?
Showing up in the answers of ChatGPT and other AI assistants depends on your site being found and chosen as a source: pages indexed on Google and Bing, access open to the assistants' search crawlers and content that answers the question directly, with verifiable facts. Nobody can guarantee a citation; these practices raise the odds.

How AI assistants choose their sources
When a question calls for current information, the assistant runs searches, reads the pages it finds and writes the answer with links to its sources. Each company describes its own process, and none publishes the formula behind the choice.
- Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode): Runs several related searches across subtopics of the question and shows supporting links; the page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Search.
- ChatGPT: Search relies on OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and on third-party search providers, and rewrites the question into one or more searches.
- Copilot and Bing: Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite pages from the Bing index, and Bing Webmaster Tools shows when that happens.
What they share: the page has to be in the index, reachable by the crawler and a good answer to one of the searches the assistant ran.
Indexing on Google and Bing, and crawler access
- Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools: Register the site with both, submit the sitemap and fix the pages left out of the index.
- robots.txt: OAI-SearchBot must be allowed for the site to appear in ChatGPT's search answers; according to OpenAI, a change takes about 24 hours to apply.
- Search and training are separate: GPTBot collects content to train models and is controlled on its own, so blocking it does not remove the site from ChatGPT search.
- Snippet controls: Nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex also apply to Google's AI features, so check whether an important page uses one of them.
- IndexNow: Tells Bing and other participating search engines when a page changes, so the new version gets in faster; Google is not among the participants.
Structured data and llms.txt: what they do and do not do
Google states that you do not need AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Both tools help in other ways, and it pays to know the limits of each.
- Structured data (JSON-LD): With the schema.org vocabulary, it describes the company, the services, the FAQs and the navigation in a way machines read without ambiguity, and it must match what is visible on the page.
- llms.txt: An open proposal for a Markdown file at the site root, with a summary and links to the main pages, meant for AI agents; it is a cheap addition, not a shortcut to being cited.
- Consistent company data: The same name, website address and description everywhere the company appears keep a machine from confusing it with another.
This website, built by Master Timm with Astro, uses JSON-LD and llms.txt and scored 100 in all four Lighthouse mobile categories, measured in production on September 30, 2026. The score measures technical quality; it does not guarantee a citation.
Content an assistant can cite
The assistant looks for passages that answer a specific search. Bing recommends clear headings, tables, FAQ sections, subject focus and up-to-date content; in practice, that translates into writing habits.
- A direct answer at the top: Two or three sentences that answer the question in the title on their own, without relying on the rest of the page.
- One question per page: The title and the H1 say which one, and the sections follow the order in which the buyer thinks.
- Tables and lists: Comparisons and steps in a table or a list, with headers that say what each column compares.
- Facts with sources: Numbers, standards and dates linked to the original document.
- Visible authorship and date: Who publishes and when the page was updated, with a review whenever the facts change.
- FAQs: Written the way customers ask, with the answer in the first sentence.
How to measure your presence in AI answers
- Google: Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode count in the Search Console performance report, under the Web search type, together with regular search.
- ChatGPT: Links in its answers reach the site with utm_source=chatgpt.com, which sets those visits apart in analytics.
- Bing and Copilot: The AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often pages were cited in Copilot and in Bing AI summaries, and for which searches.
- Manual check: A fixed list of your buyer's questions, asked every month in the main assistants, shows whether the company appears and how it is described.
AI answers change from one query to the next. Look at the trend over months, not at a single screenshot.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in ChatGPT?
No: for ChatGPT search, OpenAI asks that OAI-SearchBot can reach the site, and Google says there is no need to create AI text files. llms.txt is an open proposal that helps the agents that read it; it works as an addition, not a requirement.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT?
No: GPTBot collects content to train models and OAI-SearchBot is the search crawler, and the two are controlled independently in robots.txt. Blocking only GPTBot signals that the content should not be used for training and keeps the site eligible for search answers.
Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT's answers?
Not in the answers: OpenAI states that ads in ChatGPT run on separate systems, are clearly labeled and do not influence what the model answers. Being cited depends on the content being found and useful for the question.
Does traditional SEO still matter with AI search?
It does, and it is the foundation: Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond those of regular search, and a page must be indexed to serve as a source. What changes is the shape of the content, which has to answer early and carry facts that can be cited.
