01
Recognize this situation?
The SaaS platform cannot handle your B2B rules: price lists per customer, minimum order, credit approval and invoicing per company.
Every order is retyped into the ERP, and store inventory no longer matches real inventory by the end of the day.
Subscription, per-sale fees and paid apps grow along with revenue, and the store still looks like every competitor.
The platform migration has been postponed for months, for fear of losing Google rankings, orders and customer history.

Checkout and payments
Checkout and payments
Your own checkout with cards, Pix and boleto through the gateway you choose, shipping calculation and installment rules, with every step measured to show where shoppers drop off.
B2B: customer portal and ordering
B2B: customer portal and ordering
Company accounts with multiple buyers, quotes, quick reorder from past orders, credit limits and payment terms per customer.
Tax invoicing (NF-e)
Tax invoicing (NF-e)
NF-e issuance tied to the order, through your ERP or an invoicing service, with product tax data handled in the catalog rather than after the sale.
ERP, payment and logistics integrations
ERP, payment and logistics integrations
Orders, inventory, prices and tracking synced with the ERP, the gateway and the carriers, with queues, retries and logs so a system outage does not turn into a lost order.
Migration with SEO preserved
Migration with SEO preserved
Migration of products, customers and orders, a 301 redirect map for the old URLs and a planned cutover window so sales do not stop.
Event-driven architectureEach domain sits isolated behind an API with contracts. Services publish events to a bus with queues and retries, and workers handle integrations and per-tenant data, without coupling one domain to another.

Who it is for and who it is not
Custom e-commerce development is the building or migration of a B2B (selling to businesses) or B2C (selling to consumers) online store, on custom code or an open-source platform, with catalog, checkout, tax and integrations shaped to the operation. Hire it when pricing rules, integrations or volume no longer fit a subscription platform such as Shopify.
A good fit for
Manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers selling B2B with price lists, credit and terms per customer.
B2C stores that have hit the limits of their SaaS platform in rules, integrations or cost per sale.
Operations that depend on ERP, tax and logistics integrated with the order, with no retyping.
US companies that want senior engineering in an overlapping time zone to build or evolve the store.
Not a fit for
Anyone starting to sell online with a simple catalog: Shopify or a similar SaaS platform does it for less, in days.
Anyone who only wants a theme or a visual tweak on a SaaS store: a platform agency is a better fit.
Paid media, social media or content management: our work is the engineering of the store.
Teams that need dozens of people staffed immediately: we deliver senior engineering on a defined scope, not staff augmentation.

How it works and timelines
01
Discovery
Discovery
We map the catalog, commercial rules, tax, integrations and what the current platform no longer handles. You receive the recommendation (stay on SaaS, open-source platform or custom), the target architecture, the plan and the estimate.
02
Specification and migration plan
Specification and migration plan
Specs, ADRs and acceptance criteria per flow: catalog, pricing, checkout, order and invoice. The migration plan lists data, URLs and redirects. You approve the scope before the first line of code.
03
Proof of concept
Proof of concept
One end-to-end flow on real data, usually the order with per-customer pricing integrated with the ERP. You receive a working PoC and a recommendation to proceed, adjust or stop.
04
Production
Production
Short iterations with frequent releases: catalog, checkout, integrations and automated tests as a gate. You receive the first version in production; larger scopes are split into phases, each with its own estimate.
05
Cutover and evolution
Cutover and evolution
Data migration, redirects and close monitoring of the first orders in production. After that, monitoring, documentation and evolution with your team or under a monthly retainer.

Technical details
How we use AI with governance, the decision comparison and the stack
AI with governance
We use AI to build the store faster and, when it makes sense, inside the store. In both cases, the spec comes before the code and every decision gets senior human review.
Where AI comes inAI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, OpenCode) implement from approved specs, following Spec-Driven Development.
What humans reviewPricing rules, tax calculation, checkout and every merge go through senior human review.
Quality gatesAutomated tests of the order and payment flows, coverage targets and static analysis before every merge.
AI in the storeSearch, recommendations and catalog enrichment come as their own phase, with evaluation and metrics defined first.
Your dataClient data never trains models, and we work under NDA.

Frequently asked questions about Custom E-commerce Development
When should I move from Shopify to a custom e-commerce platform?
Move when the platform starts limiting the operation: B2B rules it cannot handle, integrations that depend on spreadsheets or retyping, or fees and apps that grow faster than your margin. If the catalog is simple and the rules are standard, staying on SaaS is the right call, and we tell you so in the first conversation, before you hire anything. There are also middle paths: keep the store and integrate it better, or migrate to an open-source platform.
How much does a custom e-commerce website cost?
It depends on four factors: the size and complexity of the catalog, the commercial rules (B2B, per-customer pricing), the number of integrations and the volume of data to migrate. That is why we do not publish a price list. A 1–2 week discovery defines scope, risks and estimate, and the proposal can be fixed scope or time & materials with a cap, in USD or BRL. Add the recurring costs of hosting, gateway and maintenance to the development cost.
How long does it take to build a custom e-commerce store?
Typical timelines are: discovery in 1–2 weeks, proof of concept in 2–4 weeks and the first version in production in 6–12 weeks. Large catalogs, many integrations or complex migrations are split into phases, each with its own estimate. The biggest factors are the quality of the product data and the availability of the ERP and partner APIs.
How do you migrate platforms without losing SEO, orders and customers?
With a migration plan written before the code: an inventory of indexed URLs, a 301 redirect map, migration of products, customers and order history, and a cutover rehearsed in staging. Passwords are never migrated in plain text; when the source platform does not export the hash, customers reset their access. After the cutover we track 404 errors, indexing and the first orders. Some ranking fluctuation in the first weeks is common, and the redirects reduce that risk.
What does a B2B e-commerce platform need?
It needs to sell to companies the way your sales team already does: price lists and payment terms per customer, minimum order, credit limits, multiple buyers per company, quotes and quick reorder. Next comes ERP integration, so that prices, inventory and invoicing are the same as over the counter. Mahout ERP, which we built, combined orders, multi-warehouse inventory and finance on a single platform.
Does the store issue Brazilian tax invoices (NF-e) and integrate with my ERP?
Yes: NF-e can be issued by your ERP, integrated with the store order, or by an invoicing service connected directly to the platform. In discovery we define where the invoice originates and which tax data the product catalog must carry. This is familiar ground: Mahout ERP, which we built, issued NF-e via SEFAZ, and we contribute to NFePHP, Brazil's leading open-source NF-e library. Tax rules are validated with your accountants.
Magento, headless or fully custom: which one should I choose?
Magento when a large catalog and B2B rules fit existing modules; headless when the buying experience or selling across several channels matters most; fully custom code only when the rules fit no platform. Headless separates the storefront, what shoppers see, from the commerce engine that handles catalog, pricing and orders. That raises build and maintenance cost, so it is not the default choice. Discovery compares the paths against your catalog and your integrations.
Who maintains the store after launch?
You choose: your in-house team, with the documentation and tests we hand over, or Master Timm under a monthly retainer. Either way the store ships with automated tests, CI/CD, monitoring and specs, so another team can take it over. On open-source platforms such as Magento, security and version upgrades are part of the maintenance plan from day one.
In the first conversation we look at the catalog, the rules and the integrations, and tell you plainly whether to migrate, integrate better or stay where you are.
